Portable Border

Sixty potted Chrysanthemum are moved daisy-chain fashion to define a temporal border across Darmstadt. Following this action the flowers are given away to the people of Darmstadt with a poster campaign proclaming »Freie Blumen« and specificing where and when they can be taken.

»Portable Border« was first devised for the town of Lahti, Finland in 2000. Almost immediately there was a feeling that the border could continue, in each instance being adapted to the nature of its surroundings. The subsequent photographs of the flowers progress infer their unbroken passage across the town. The position of the flowers and therefore the performance
of the work defines the composition of the photographs that
document it.
